The structural difference
PagerDuty is excellent at one half of the problem: escalation, on-call, and getting a human's attention. The half it doesn't do is detection. It ingests alerts from a separate tool you also pay for, usually Datadog. So a PagerDuty setup is really two products and a wiring diagram. Faultline is one product that owns the whole loop: detection, incident, escalation, runbook, resolution, post-mortem.

What you stop paying for
With PagerDuty you typically run Datadog (or similar) plus PagerDuty: one tool to detect, one to page, both per-seat or per-host, AI features extra on both. Faultline collapses that into a single flat-tier subscription where detection, incidents, escalation, runbooks, and AI are all included. You're not getting a full APM in the trade. If you need distributed tracing, keep Datadog. But for the detect, page, remediate loop that most teams actually run PagerDuty for, Faultline does the whole thing.
What Faultline adds that PagerDuty can't
Detection that sees internal jobs. Heartbeat monitors catch the cron job or queue worker that silently stopped, invisible to any alert PagerDuty could ingest.
Self-healing. Runbooks execute automatically when an incident opens, then Faultline verifies the service actually recovered and escalates to a human if it didn't.
An MCP server. Your AI agent can diagnose an incident and, with approval, remediate it. PagerDuty has no agent-operable surface.
AI in the base price. Summaries, post-mortems, and anomaly detection, not a premium add-on.

Migrating
Faultline has on-call schedules, rotations, overrides, and multi-level escalation policies, the PagerDuty surface area teams rely on. The difference is that the detection feeding them lives in the same product.
Bottom line
Pick PagerDuty if you have a mature detection stack you're happy with and only need best-in-class paging. Pick Faultline if you'd rather not run and pay for two tools, and want the loop to close itself, with AI included.
